Real Cofradía de Santiago Apóstol de Tudela - Parte I

La Cofradía de Santiago Apóstol de Tudela siempre fue denominada Real, y la primera referencia documental de su existencia data del año 1232, la cual aparece en un testamento otorgado por D. Pedro Concapel que fue depositado en el Convento de Clarisas, pero el hecho de que llevase en su pendón las cadenas, hace suponer a varios autores e historiadores, al no encontrarle otra explicación, que pudo tener su origen durante el reinado de Sancho VII "El Fuerte", quien reinó en Navarra entre los años 1194 y 1234.

Jesús Arraiza en su libro «Cofradías de Santiago en Navarra» (1998) indica que esta Cofradía estaría entre las más antiguas con esta advocación en Navarra (*). En el Archivo Municipal de Tudela se conserva un documento de las Ordenanzas de esta antigua cofradía tudolense, manuscrito por D. Juan Antonio Fernández en el siglo XVIII, aprobadas el 1 de junio de 1351 por el rey Carlos II "El Malo" de Navarra (1332-1387). 

The Confraternity of the Santa Caridad - Parte I

Compared to the Hospital of Tavera, the welfare activities of a confraternity, even wealthy and pretigious one like the Santa Caridad, seem somewhat meagre. The brothers of Santa Caridad did not offer to house, clothe and treat the poor in a large, fully-staffed hospital, but instead carried thier relief to the poor in their own homes or wherever they maid need assistance.

This type of relief did not entail the expense of maintaining a large, well-furnished building or of feeding, paying and housing a staff. Except for the officials who received a small salary, the members of the brotherhood offered their services free of charge as a part of the charitable obligations they sougth to fulfil when they joined the confraternity.
